OVERVIEW: Smocked, a combination of the words "smock" (i.e. artist smock) and "mocked", is a magazine designed to expose and debunk artist stereotypes in a comical, but also realistic manner. Smocked was inspired by the negative comments creatives often hear from friends, family, strangers, and non-design professionals about "artsy people." Using visual puns as imagery, paired with sarcastic, but informative articles, Smocked addresses challenges artists and designers face – most of which go undiscussed outside the studio. This magazine was created not only as a response to the public about misconstrued stereotypes, but also to encourage artists and designers to pursue their dreams by promoting attractive opportunities in the arts. This magazine was created using all original images and experiments, such as painting a canvas and punching through it, photographing a paint pallet and silverware, playing with paint and test tubes, painting and photographing overalls, hand cutting images out of magazines and physically collaging them together, etc.
