OVERVIEW: This ballerina illustration was designed to pair with the article, "Ballet Lessons", which discusses the toxicity of perfectionism, body image, race, and gender stereotypes that have existed for generations in ballet. However, towards the end, the article takes a positive spin, discussing how in recent years there have been significant changes and progress. To capture the feeling, power, and message behind this article, I illustrated a mirror, which was also referenced in the article, stating how it haunts the ballerinas. However, I wanted this mirror to shatter, just as many modern ballerinas are shattering stereotypes and are unbound by the rules that once trapped them. In addition, to address ballet's increasing inclusivity, each piece of the shattered mirror has a different girl's body part, of all shapes, colors, and sizes.
